Dear Mr. Yohannan,
In my college search, I decided to research Alvernia University and Stevenson University. I selected Alvernia to research because I recently visited their campus for an open house, and thoroughly enjoyed the school and wish to know more about it. On the other hand, I researched Stevenson because I have not yet visited them, but I would like to. Each of the schools offer majors I am interested in, such a psychology, forensic studies, and sports management. Despite this, ultimately, I am undecided. Alvernia about an hour away from home, and Stevenson is an hour and a half away; both distances appeal to me because I feel as though I would be able to have my independence, while still remaining not totally separated from home. Both Alvernia and Stevenson are smaller schools, but, at least for Alvernia, felt bigger. I would enjoy a smaller to medium sized school because I could still enjoy an active social life, but I wouldn’t become just a number to my professors. Alvernia is slightly over price range, and Stevenson is not too bad.
Each of the schools, I would put in the category of “middle of the road”. I put Alvernia in this category because to get in, Alvernia requires the SAT with a score of 950-1150 to get in. As for Stevenson, I said this was a “middle of the road” school because Stevenson requires an SAT score of anywhere from 990-1200, and a GPA of 3.2 to get in. Between now and application time, to specifically get into Alvernia, I need to raise my SAT score. I have been, and while continue, practicing with khan academy in order to improve my scores. Improving my scores for my SATs will not only help me at Alvernia, but also at Stevenson. In addition to Stevenson, I will need to maintain, if not better my grades that I have right now. My GPA must be at least a 3.2 or higher. Both schools have a DIII NCAA women’s ice hockey team, so I will need to and want to fill out the recruitment form for both schools, especially Alvernia, since they will be a new program. As a generality, between now and application time, I need to ask and get my letters of rec from teachers, polish up my college essay, attempt to figure out my major, and meet with my guidance counselor (and my parents) to discuss my options and paths.
Both Alvernia and Stevenson are schools that I could potentially see myself attending. For my goals and dreams, I envision myself attending a four year university and getting my bachelors degree. Aside from academics, I have a dream to play college hockey, NCAA DIII. As I mentioned before, both schools have NCAA DIII women's’ ice hockey teams. Playing for one of these teams while getting my education to have a successful career, is my biggest goal at either of these schools. In class, we took different values and personality tests that helped me determine different things I wanted in my school. For example, though these tests, I realized that I wanted a college campus that was bigger than it actually was; I want a small school that feels big and interacts a lot. In addition, the tests helped my to realize that I would also like a school near a city, or at least some place where fun events happen. Aside from the location around the campus, the personality test made me aware that I would enjoy a school the gives me indepence from my home. Lots of research and thought goes into my school choice, so there is no way I can officially say I will go to Alvernia or Stevenson, but I will keep them at a higher interest.
Sincerely,
Gianna Manzi
